I read in the forums that some of the unixshell network hardware pings our vps in order to optimize the network and routing (see link to post below)?

What are the consequences of disabling ping on my vps firewall? My usual policy is to have my firewall drop ping requests, but I don't want to do this if it will adversely affect my network performance.
