I just ordered "The 256", but now I'm second guessing my decision having looked at the Unmanaged VPS options on the TekTonic site. I'm also a bit confused about the relationship between unixshell# and TekTonic.

For $30 "The 256" gives me 256MB of memory, 256 units of CPU, 12GB of disk, 256GB of transfer and one snapshot.

For $28 "UM2" gives me 256MB of memory, "Fair share" CPU access, 20GB of disk, 640GB of transfer and (no snapshot capability???)

Is there a fundamental difference in the technology behind the two offerings? I'm looking at the two sites and seeing essential the same information on the tech side.

What am I missing here?

The short story as I see it. unxishell is based on the Xen technology which are faster and dont allow overselling (You are garentied the rescources you signed up for). But it is newer technologi and are not as well testet as UML or Virtuozzo.

I migrated from a VPS on tektonic to a similar unixshell VPS and I noticed a rather substatial speed increse, esp when I am logged in with ssh and running programs.

Hi,

The difference is Virtuozzo/Xen technologies and a few key features.

1. unixshell# supports more distros and you can change whenever you like.
2. unixshell# has burstable bandwidth, TekTonic is capped.
3. Both have snapshots

Virtuozzo is based on the ability to oversell and at TekTonic we do oversell the servers by a little bit. With Xen/unixshell# what you buy is what you get.

Thanks, Matt. I've made the right choice then. I eagerly await my account activation.
