Hi - When you first sign up for, say, 'The 96' does the vm have a default firewall installed - I'm concerned about the machine being rooted before I get a chance to protect it.
thanks
Richard.

We try to keep our images up to date, but the welcome letter advises customers the first step they should take is run their distributions package updater (ie. yum/apt/emerge).

For a firewall, I'd suggest using APF (an iptables based firewall system) from http://www.rfxnetworks.com/apf.php as it's free and quite simple to use.
You may want to take a peek at http://www.nsonetworks.com as they have the "Easy Linux Security" script which may help with inital security hardening.

I've added ELS to our wiki, seems like a useful program.
