View Full Version : Why not buy the TekTonic plan?

Hi,
I'm slightly confused.
I'm currently using your '32' plan - which costs $7.99 a month. I was looking at upgrading to the '64' - which costs $14.99 a month.
However, if I buy from your parent company Tektonic, $15 a month buys me a plan with 128MB of memory, 10GB of disk space, 'unmetered' bandwidth.
I'm going to assume you don't care if I buy from unixshell or Tektonic - but if there any reason to buy the unixshell plan when the Tektonic one seems to offer more for the same price?

The difference is Virtuozzo and Xen. Virtuozzo is software that not only allows overselling, but is specifically designed to oversell (ie. with it's disk and memory sharing between VPS accounts). For this reason it is easy to offer mroe disk space as more is allocated than is physically available on the server. The other thing is Virtuozzo has 20+ variables that control "memory" usage, so even though everything else is in order you may be exceeding your open file limit. Under Xen you get you RAM and that is it, if you need more files just use sysctl to mke more available.
In summary, Xen/unixshell# is still awsome in my mind, but with the market going so well for the Xen un-managed servers there was also demand for the same with Virtuozzo. I'm not going to say you can go wrong either way, but they both have their own distinct advantages.

I suppose another big difference is unixshell# is full 100mbit with a transfer limit. The TekTonic plans are un-metered which is good for some people. The lowest level plan there is 512kbit/s outbound and 100mbit un-metered inbound. 512kbit is usable, but if you plan on doing a lot of bursty traffic it is not good. On a plus note addl 512kbit is only $25/mo (or $50/mbit) which isn't a bad deal at all. In the next month or so we will be bringing in Cogent with a BGP mix on our Premium network and the un-managed plans will see a much cheaper rate.
Just to make things clear, unixshell# will remain fully on the Premium network, except using policy routing we will direct IRC ports to use Cogent as they allow it on their network. The Premium network will also failover for the Cogent link and vice versa.

I used to have a tektonic 15$ plan before I moved to at 64 plan at unixshell. I don't want to move back as the unixshell services are much better for me.
Xen is much more responsive than virtuozzo.
The ability to have a console port and watch and modify startup behaviour is very usefull.

Does that mean that I am allowed to use IRC on my VPS?

Slightly OT, but why do some hosting providers, data centers, ISPs, whatever, prohibit IRC servers? Is it a resource issue, a security issue, or something else?
(Just curious. No desire to run IRC myself, but I see it mentioned in AUPs here and there.)

IRC makes a network prone to DoS attacks. By blocking IRC it drastically decreases DoS launched against the network.

Has this occured yet? I'm really interested in using your service but when I have a problem on my system and google comes up empty, #debian is the first place I head. As your TOS reads today I can't sign up because this would violate it :(

In the spirit of the start of this thread, will this Cogent/IRC change affect both Tektonic and unixshell, or just unixshell?

It is the same core network so it will affect both.
I'm guessing by my traceroute output that Cogent has not been brought in yet. Is there an update on this?

I'm expecting do get this done in a month or two, I have to arrange to fly down to Atlanta to install a new router and at that time will bring in Cogent.

"The 32" has 32GB bandwidth. Is that 32GB outbound (which is the expensive bandwidth if I understand correctly) and then inbound is unlimited (but maybe capped)?
Much cheaper rate for the un-managed plans? Well, that sounds pretty good. Do you have any idea about the new rates? Maybe you can provide an updated schedule for bringing in Cogent?
Thanks for your time.

The bandwidth limits are discussed elsewhere in the forum, but basically for the unixshell accounts you have a fast connection both up and down stream. The 32GB of bandwidth is in+out.
For Tektonic, you have 512kbit (for the UM1 plan) out, 100mbit in. So moving things to your site is very quick. Downloads from the site are less so, though by no means bad for the price :-)
I'm in the middle of comparing the unixshell 64 to the Tektonic UM1, and am having a very hard time making a decision. Performance seems pretty similar between the two. I like the flexibility offered by the unixshell account, but the automated backups on Tektonic are a major pull, especially for a small, personal site.
