I just saw a "going down for reboot" message come across the console. Does that correspond to me hosing my VPS, XEN going down, or the host hardware going down for reboot?
Thanks.

Are you on vm3? I saw your post and sure enough, my host is down and there is no connecting to https://vm.unixshell.com:7373. Trying to connect to the console leads to "Error connecting to xend, is xend running?"

My vm is down too.
Theres a thread in Outages and maintenance about it.
Is there an offical channel where we should be getting notified about reboots
and maintenance downtime?

I think the "announcements and maintenance" category is dedicated to information about scheduled downtime.

This is very bad... I am sorry. We were planning to upgrade power on a rack to deal with more load from servers (current and new) and our datacenter where we colo at just decided to do it in the middle of the day without even caring if anyone from our side is around.
I'm very upset myself over this and trust me i'm making sure they get everything up immediately. This was very bad on their part and we may be switching shortly due to this (and previous mishaps).

That is definitely not cool. Is there an expected time frame for the upgrade to be completed?

Only vm3 and vm4 are down. We have remote console to them (via serial), but cannot get them to boot up.
Right now we have the DC techs trying to get them up to the point where I can login... until then it's in their hands. I don't know specifics on time frame, but it will be within an hour or two hopefully. See my other posts regarding this for a full picture.

My system in vm3 just said hello. (I've configured it to send me a mail on boot.)
Kudos to David and Matt. It must have been a maddening day.

matta and davidk,
Hang in there, make sure you get some sleep.

I saw a lot of messages about VM3 being back up. Is VM4 ready yet, or was my account forgotten.
In case VM4 is still down (my VPS is not live yet, so I'm not impatient), hang in there, Matt / David. I know what you guys are going through and I hope you get sleep soon.

That's a great idea... I'll have to figure out how to do that. (As I don't have email on the box yet, it might take a while.)

In most distros, you can put a script in /etc/rcS.d to make it run on boot. Just a simple shell script will do:#!/bin/sh
echo "Reboot: done" | mail -s "myhost.com reboot" myself@gmail.com
You can also send yourself a mail on shutdown by putting a script in /etc/rc6.d. Just make sure it runs early on in the shutdown process so the mail server has time to send it before it gets killed.

vm4 has been down since 7:30 pm yesterday, so 16 hours.
vm4 issued shutdown warnings right before going down.
How does a powerdown destroy disks? Why doesn't the rack fallover to UPS when a new power supply is brought in? Why can't the box take a powerdown /reboot cycle?
Nothing matta and davidk have said really answer any of these obvious questions.
